As a young doctor, John was inspired by a rotation in Paediatric Emergency to train simultaneously in Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics. His peripatetic training took him from Adelaide to Alice Springs, Ireland, United Kingdom, and Canberra before returning to Adelaide in 2011 to develop paediatric emergency services at Flinders Medical Centre. In 2016, he was appointed as a Paediatric Retrieval Consultant with MedSTAR kids Retrieval Service and became Head of Unit the following year. After 6 years in this role, he made the decision to take on the challenge of developing acute services at Mt Barker Hospital, where he is the Clinical Director of the Emergency Department. He has teaching appointments at Flinders, Charles Darwin and Adelaide Universities, with a specific interest in paramedic and prehospital education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
In his spare time, John keeps bees and chickens, swims, teaches paediatric life support, and juggles this with keeping his Labrador ‘puppies’ exercised. He has an anecdote for most occasions.
